Village activities
Visit a traditional sheepfold in Romania and see how shepherding is practiced these days in Romania.
Millions of sheep graze during summer months high in the Carpathian Mountains accompanied by shepherds who still live life as it was 2000 years ago. Three hairy breeds of shepherd dogs, that protect the sheep from wolves and bears, come from this region: Mioritic, Carpatin and Bucovina.
The shepherds’ favorite food is balmoș, made from corn flower, cream and cheese, so simple and so delicious. Daily life includes tending herds, milking sheep, making cheese, cooking, all at a very slow pace. In April, herds, shepherds, dogs and donkeys move to higher pasture in the mountains and in October they return to the valleys, a phenomenon known as transhumance. This picturesque pastoral lifestyle has inspired moving popular stories, legends and myths; we will hike to a sheepfold and immerse ourselves in it and also find out the legends.
