Detailed tour information

Day 1 of your guided tour in Transylvania

You will be met by your tour guide in Bucharest and set on the road to Sibiu, where you will settle in a traditional rural guesthouse in a nearby village. Depending on the time of arrival you can explore the village with the help of your guide and enjoy a traditional welcome dinner with your hosts.

Day 2: Corvin Castle in Hunedoara and Alba Iulia

From Sibiu you will go for a day trip to the Corvin (Hunyadi) Castle in Hunedoara, the most outstanding in Transylvania. It has Gothic-Renaissance architecture and was built in the 15th century.

Another highlight of the day is Alba Iulia, a medieval star-shaped forified town, the largest of its kind in Transylvania. It has a major historical significance, as it is the place where Transylvania united with Moldova, Wallachia and Dobruja in 1918 to form Romania as we know it today.

On the way we can pass by Sarmizegetusa Regia, the old capital of Dacia and the fortress in Câlnic, both UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Day 3: Sibiu, Europe's Cultural Capital in 2007

You will discover Sibiu with its charming medieval squares, towers and buildings.

In 2007, Sibiu was Europe’s Cultural Capital so it is a great place to learn about the local culture by visiting the History, Art, Natural Science or German Saxon heritage museums. This way you will gain a wider perspective of Transylvania’s and Romania’s heritage.

In the afternoon you will tour the Transylvanian Village Museum and learn about traditional occupations and architecture. It is the biggest open air museum in this part of Europe and it is set in a great location with forest and lakes.

Day 4: Rural life in Transylvania

Rural life in Transylvania is largely preserved and many occupations are still practiced like centuries ago. You will meet locals who paint on glass, make bricks, make cheese and bread, as well as a family of shepherds who live high up in the mountains in an electricity-free hamlet.

Besides learning how they do things, you will enjoy getting to know these hard-working, lively people who love what they do.

Day 5: Sighisoara and Biertan fortified church

You will continue your guided tour in Transylvania with one of its highlights: Sighișoara, probably Europe’s most beautiful medieval fortified citadel. It is a charming town, laid on a hilltop, with narrow cobbled streets and beautiful historic buildings. You will go up the Clock Tower, see the well-preserved defensive towers and get a feel of how life used to be in medieval times.

On the way you will pass by Biertan to admire the most imposing fortified church in Transylvania and meeting place of emigrant German Saxons.

Both Sighisoara and Biertan are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Day 6: Viscri, a well preserved traditional village

Visit one of the best preserved fortified churches in Viscri, now also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, a major heritage conservation project is under way having HRH Prince Charles of Wales as its biggest supporter; he even owns houses here and visits yearly.

In the 6th day you will also explore the village and countryside, visit a blacksmith and take a horse drawn carriage ride.

Day 7: Bran Castle, bears and Brasov

You will continue with Bran, Transylvania’s most famous castle, due to its association with Dracula. It's high time you found out the truth and saw it with your own eyes. In reality, it is a wonderful 15th century castle decorated by our queen 90 years ago.

You will also visit the bear sanctuary and see rescued bears living in a natural habitat. In the evening, you will visit Brasov and even hike on the nearby mountain for a stunning panorama from above (going up by cable car is an option as well).

Day 8: Peles and Pelisor castles

The picturesque Peleș and Pelișor castles are set in wonderful natural settings surrounded by forests and mountains. They impress with their intricate outdoor and interior decorations and give a sense of how a royal family used to live.

This will be the last day of your guided Transylvania tour, unless you change your mind and want to explore more of this beautiful country!
