Another legend involves Vlad Țepeș (or the Impaler, the main character who inspired the story of Dracula) who was imprisoned here for 7 years before he married the daughter of the Corvin Castle owner and took back his reign of Wallachia.
Sigismund of Luxemburg donated the castle in 1409 to the Corvin family (Corvin comes from the Latin corvus, meaning raven).
During a visit to the Corvin Castle in Hunedoara you will also find about Iancu de Hunedoara (or Janos Hunyadi). He is the one is most closely related to the castle having built the oldest standing section of the castle, and the most spectacular one too!
In 1506, George of Brandenburg came into ownership by marrying a widow from the Corvin family. In the following centuries the castle was owned by Torok, Bethlen and Apaffy families before it was taken over by the Austrian empire and then by Romania.
At the beginning of the 15th century it had Gothic architecture features and after multiple fires and subsequent renovations using more modern techniques it took on an eclectic mix throughout the ages. Many of the families who owned the Corvin Castle from Hunedoara added their distinctive desires such as new wings, halls, towers morphing it over the centuries into a Gothic-Renaissance style.
By public transport you can reach the Corvin Castle in Hunedoara by bus only, from Deva, Timisoara, Cluj or Bucharest for example. There are no trains.
