Wine tasting trip in Western Transylvania

In Western Transylvania there are some boutique vineyards which produce wine of excellent quality and we suggest a trip including at least 2 evenings.

Especially red wine is very good, the local Cadarcă is dry, balanced, having an intensive color and spicy flavor; goes very well with red meat. From the white wines, Mustoasa stands out having a greenish color and citrus flavor, goes well with deserts and white meat.

3 days

Detailed tour information

Suggestion for 2 nights, 3 days

For the first evening we recommend to try the classic wines and serve a traditional cold platter including sausage, bacon, cheese and vegetables.

For the second evening we suggest trying the premium wines and beef goulash, the house specialty considering that the owner is Romanian of Hungarian ethnicity. In each of the evening you will try at least 4-5 different types of locally produced wine.

During the day, you can participate in season specific activities in the vineyard from cutting the strings in spring to picking grapes in September.

Additional activities

For a few hours you can have a walk to the nearby sheepfold where the shepherd will welcome you with a traditional lunch. If you get there early in the day, you can even join him to milk the sheep and learn how he makes cheese.

10 or 20 km from where you will stay, on top of the hills there are the ruins of 2 fortresses from the 14th century which were part of Transylvania’s medieval defense system. You can get there by car and then hike the way up the hill in 30 minutes to the closer one and in 1 hour in the second location.

In summer and autumn you can also join locals in preparing winter provisions: jam, zacuscă (vegetable spread) and pickles. You can spend on this anywhere between a few hours to a few days.

Romanian wine

Romanian wine has a 6000 years old tradition and the climate is very suitable for making wine, being at the same latitude as France. In 2009 Romania was the 11th largest producer of wine worldwide, making as much wine as Portugal, half as much as South Africa or Australia, double than Hungary and triple than New Zealand.

Romania’s terrain is almost equally split among mountains, hills and plain thus having a very large area suitable for vineyards.  In all four historical regions of Romania there are great vineyards and in Transylvania there are 3 of importance: one for white wine in the center and 2 for red wine in the west.

Romanian wine is not well promoted abroad but most connoisseurs would agree that it’s very good, there is also a wide variety of wines. Many Romanian families traditionally produce their own home made wine. There are several Romanian grape varieties: Galbena de Odobesti, Grasa de Cotnari, Feteasca Albă, Feteasca Neagra, Busuioaca de Bohotin and Tamaioasa Romaneasca.
