Densuș church is veiled in mystery having possible origins as a pagan temple and later on dedicated to Mars.

Its origins are veiled in mystery, on this site there might have been a pagan temple, upon which after Romans occupied this land, they dedicated it to the god Mars. Apparently when building it, they used stone from the site of Sarmizegetusa Regia, the ancient capital of the Dacian Kingdom before Roman occupation. Therefore you can find Roman inscriptions on the walls.

Later on it became Christian church and inside we can actually find a painting of Jesus dressed in Romanian traditional clothes. With its history possibly starting in the 4th century, it can be considered the oldest church in Romania and South East Europe.

Currently the church is knows as Saint Nicholas and was proposed to become a UNESCO world heritage site.
